Good news from Chile: Tierra Austral Land Trust begins 2022 with important progress in its mission protecting the country's Mediterranean ecosystem

At the end of 2021, Fundación Tierra Austral, a non-profit organization dedicated to private lands conservation, successfully completed the first phase of its Boldo to Cantillana project.  This conservation initiative, which is supported by the BHP Foundation, is protecting ecologically significant landscapes comprised of Chile's Mediterranean habitat -the rarest, most threatened, and least protected ecosystem in the country- by using the Derecho Real de Conservación (DRC), Chile’s breakthrough private lands conservation agreement.

This project is advancing the protection of a 930,000-hectare landscape corridor, located in Chile's Central Valley. The Boldo-Cantillana corridor extends from the capital city of Santiago to the resort city of Zapallar on the Pacific coast, with the goal of creating critical habitat linkages between the Coastal Range to the Andes Mountains. That said, between 2019 and 2021, Tierra Austral worked on the development of the first stage of this project that was recently completed after achieving three private areas that will be protected in perpetuity through DRC agreements. 

The last of them corresponds to the Ecological Condominium of Águila Sur, which will protect more than 230 hectares of the Mediterranean ecosystem of central Chile. Thus, native and endemic species of flora and fauna will be able to protect themselves from threats typical of this area of the country such as deforestation or the advance of agricultural projects.

Last but not least, a few days ago the Chilean National Congress approved a new statute granting tax incentives for a variety of social interest matters, including, for the first time, the protection and conservation of the environment. The approved bill creates a new donation regime that will work in a complementary way to the current laws in this area, strengthening philanthropy in Chile and motivating the development and consolidation of projects that seek to protect the country's natural heritage.

A finales de 2021, Fundación Tierra Austral, organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a la conservación de tierras privadas, finalizó con éxito  la primera fase de su proyecto Boldo Cantillana.  Esta iniciativa de conservación, que cuenta con el apoyo de la Fundación BHP,  está protegiendo paisajes ecológicamente significativos compuestos por el hábitat mediterráneo de Chile, a través del uso del Derecho Real de Conservación (DRC), el innovador acuerdo de conservación de tierras privadas del país.

Este proyecto tiene por objetivo formar un corredor paisajístico de 930.000 hectáreas, ubicado en el Valle Central de Chile, que se extiende desde Santiago hasta Zapallar en la costa del Pacífico, creando áreas críticas de conexión entre la Cordillera de la Costa y la Cordillera de los Andes. Así, durante el periodo entre 2019 y 2021, Tierra Austral trabajó en el desarrollo de la primera fase de esta iniciativa que finalizó recientemente luego de completar tres nuevas áreas privadas que serán protegidas a perpetuidad con acuerdos de DRC. 

La última de ellas corresponde al Condominio Ecológico de Águila Sur, que protegerá a perpetuidad más de 230 hectáreas del ecosistema mediterráneo de Chile central. Así, especies nativas y endémicas de flora y fauna podrán resguardarse de amenazas propias de esta área del país como la deforestación o el avance de proyectos agrícolas.

Finalmente, pero no menos importante, el Congreso Nacional de Chile aprobó hace unos días un nuevo estatuto que otorga incentivos tributarios a un conjunto de organizaciones que desarrollen un fin social, entre los que se incluye, por primera vez, la protección y conservación del medio ambiente. El proyecto de ley aprobado crea un nuevo regimen de donaciones que funcionará de forma complementaria a las leyes vigentes en esta materia, fortaleciendo la filantropía en Chile y motivando el desarrollo y consolidación de proyectos que busquen proteger el patrimonio natural del país.
